Rolex waterproof ad framed poster
This poster is a reprint of the famous full-page Rolex advertisement that ran on the front page of the London Daily Mail on November 24, 1927. The advertisement publicly celebrated the success of the newly introduced Rolex Oyster, the world's first practical waterproof wristwatch. Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf had provided the watch to young British swimmer Mercedes Gleitze, who wore it around her neck during her highly publicized "vindication swim" across the English Channel after a rival's false claim had cast doubt on her original record-breaking swim. Although she had to abandon the second attempt due to the cold water, the watch remained in perfect working order, demonstrating its durability and leading to this iconic marketing campaign. The event marked the birth of the "testimonee" concept, where real-world achievements by athletes and adventurers were used to prove a product's performance, a strategy Rolex still employs today.
