Suwa X Daini mug
On one side of the mug you'll find the Suwa Seikosha logo and on the other the Daini Seikosha logo.
The origins of Daini Seikosha and Suwa Seikosha lie in the strategic decentralization of the Seiko brand during the mid-20th century. Daini Seikosha (meaning "Second Seikosha") was established in 1937 as an independent watchmaking arm in Tokyo to expand production beyond the original Seikosha clock factory. During World War II, a remote production facility was set up in Suwa, Nagano Prefecture, to protect operations from bombings. This branch eventually merged with the local parts manufacturer Daiwa Kogyo in 1959 to become Suwa Seikosha, an entity now entirely separate from the Tokyo-based Daini.
The relationship between the two was defined by a unique "friendly competition" deliberately fostered by the parent company to drive innovation. Although they both manufactured under the Seiko name, they operated as fierce rivals, refusing to share movements, designs, or technical secrets. This internal arms race reached its zenith in the 1960s: Suwa Seikosha focused on engineering the ultimate high-precision luxury watch, the Grand Seiko, while Daini Seikosha responded with the distinctive and meticulously finished King Seiko. This rivalry eventually forced both factories to achieve world-class standards, leading to major victories at Swiss observatory chronometer trials and cementing Seiko's global reputation.
